I saw a quote by Dr. Seuss today. He’s one of my favorite people to quote. The quote was,
“Why fit in, when you were born to stand out?” -Dr. Seuss
It was in a blog called Life Out Of the Box and it struck a chord in me and I had to write about it. It was my prompt for the day.
We spend our whole lives sometimes trying to fit in. You’ve heard the saying, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” I have no idea where it came from, but it’s how so many of us live. We don’t want to stand out or make ourselves noticed. We don’t want to be different. Really, that’s so sad. We are all different and wonderful because of it. Even identical twins are different! Genetically, they are identical. Usually, their personalities couldn’t be more different. It’s like they need some way to be noticed for who they are, to be different. It seems that we are all created to be different. We may wear the same clothes, but in different colors.
I think we are all created to be uniquely us. We each have special gifts and talents that we need to use. They’re like a highlighter marker for our life story. Creativity in sewing and crafts is a special gift in me. A lot of people have that gift, but we each excel in different areas, and have our own unique twist within that gift. I like to make animals and pillows while someone else likes to make clothes. Same gift, unique twist. Some people have the gift of storytelling. These people are authors, or songwriters, or poets. They have the same gift, it just comes out in different ways. We all need to use our gifts and be proud of them. We need to show our gifts to the world and make a beautiful rainbow for all the world to see.
Our gift may be talking to children, or older people. It may be that we are really good at getting stains out of clothes or playing piano. Maybe you are the best bowler in your hometown, or you’re really good at stringing beads, or weaving fabric into beautiful patterns. Whatever your gift is, use it, improve it, do it the best that you can and keep learning more. Your gifts are what make you uniquely you, so be the best you you can be. We were created for this! We are me and you and him and her and that guy who just drove by. We may not feel like anyone important in the world. We may be a stay at home mom or an auto mechanic or the person who picks up the garbage at the school, but without us……well, just think about it. Remember, none of those jobs or any other is qualified with a “just” before it, because they are “just” as important as that woman telling us about the weather on TV, and the man who designed the cars, and the principal at that school. We are all equal and we all contribute to the rainbow.
I have come to learn that my role as mom, wife, cook, maid, chauffeur, therapist, ……… is the most important job in the world to my family. I use my talents to enhance my family life and help them when it’s appropriate. As they grow and are more independent, I’m renewing my interest in my other skills and talents and learning and growing as I go. If my family doesn’t have a use for my particular talent right now, well, someone else probably does so I will use it to help them. I have days when I do a lot and days when it seems as if I’ve done nothing, but each and every day, I try to be the best me I can be.
Thank you Dr. Seuss for inspiring me today.
