It’s been a while since I’ve posted my 100 Days of Happy, but that doesn’t mean I’m not happy! I’ve been using my tablet a lot and I don’t like to post directly from that….and I haven’t taken many pictures. I’ll catch up with that soon in a different post. This one is all about my new multi-tool. Everyone has heard of the multi-tools with screwdrivers and knives and sawblades and dental floss, but mine is even better and it’s just for those of us who sew.
Do you remember the plexiglass template I had made for cutting out t-shirts for quilts? If not, it’s here. Well, I have found a new use for it! For those of you who applique, you know how frustrating it can be when you go through both layers of a t-shirt or pillowcase, for example. It’s nearly impossible to get the needle and thread to go back through exactly the way they came. I was appliqueing minion faces on a pillow bed and decided to use that piece of plexiglass as a barrier between the front and back. It worked perfectly! It was large enough to provide a good working area and fit inside the pillowcase sections easily. I also didn’t have to worry about scratching it up because it doesn’t matter if it’s scratched up.
You can see the shape of it under the fabric. It fit right on my lap and let me get through 2-3 layers of fleece without catching the backing up too. I also knew when I was all the way through because I could feel the hard surface. It would great for applique even without a backing attached because you won’t catch the tablecloth or your pants in the stitching either. It also allows you to go faster because you know when you’re through the fabric and you don’t have to keep flipping it over to check. And the added bonus…….drumroll, please……….NO MORE FINGER PRICKS! I hate thimbles so my fingers invariably end up bleeding when I do handwork. Hmmm….might work for hand quilting too. I’ll have to work on that.
I hope that can help someone.
Have a great day!
