I’ve been very busy lately with crafts and party planning (#2 graduates) and I found some time to spruce up a couple of rusty cookie sheets and some ugly folding chairs. I use the folding chairs at the market and they were kind of sad looking and not attractive for kids so I bought some spray paint to brighten them up. Here is a before picture:
I already had lime green and bright blue paint so I bought purple and yellow (4 chairs + 4 cookie sheets). I had previously used the blue and green to paint cookie sheets that I use for various craft activities (holding supplies, magnetic board, etc…) so I wanted new colors to complement them for the other 2 cookie sheets and then I decided to do the chairs in the same colors. Some of my paints were good, but the yellow was really bad. Here’s what I mean:
I only did one coat on all of the chairs and you can see that the purple and green chairs turned out beautiful and the yellow one did not. I haven’t done the blue chair yet.
Here’s what we did. My daughter wanted to paint too so she did the yellow cookie sheet and then she wanted to do her own chair for the market because she is going to be helping me this summer. Green is her favorite color so she did the green chair.
First, I sanded the rust off the cookie sheets with rough sand paper and then I rinsed them and the chairs with the hose and let them dry in the sun.
Next, I set the cookie sheets on 2x4s so they wouldn’t be in the grass and then we painted them and the chairs with the selected colors and let them dry.
The purple and green dried quickly, but much later the yellow was still very tacky (in more ways than one). I don’t know if I will try to do a second coat of yellow on the cookie sheet and chair or if I will just get another color in the better paint and completely redo it. Either way it will have to wait because the weather is not cooperating and they are all hiding out from the rain in my greenhouse.
My girl and I had fun painting together no matter how it turned out. I gave her spray painting tips that she didn’t follow (and then I did the same thing), and we both laughed at the paint on each other. She had it all over her hands and I got some yellow in my hair. Really, I have no desire to be blond.
So, if you have some old cookie sheets that you would like to repurpose (think message center) or some ugly furniture that needs a little freshening up, grab some colorful spray paint from a local store (or your stash) and go to town on them!
Have a Creative Day!
