Money is a tool. It is useful. It serves a purpose. It helps us get the things we need and the things we want. Money, in and of itself, is neither good nor evil. Those things come in how we use money. Money can be replaced by anything that people hold valuable. Money is like the middle man in the barter system. If I have something you need or want and you have something I need, then we can trade. The value is in the level of our need or want. Society makes it necessary to have some money, but so much can be gotten without money. You want clothes and I want food. I make clothes and you grow food in your garden. I’ll make you clothes and give them to you in exchange for some of the food that you grow. If you have something that you want to learn and have a skill in a particular area then I can teach you what you want to learn and you can do some work for me.
It used to be the standard way of life, but it has gone by the wayside because of society’s dictates that money is more valuable than just about anything else. We use money to make more money, but do we then use that money for good? Do we do something of value with the money? Societies used to value gold above all else, so much so that our entire economy is based on the gold standard. Who ever decided that gold was valuable and why? Is it because it is pretty? It is only useful for making pretty things. It probably has some technological uses, but could also probably be replaced by something else because it is so expensive now. Suppose wiring were made from gold. The wires would be ‘valuable’ but what about the plastic that covers the wires? The plastic protects us from fires and burns so why don’t we value that as much as the gold?
What I’m trying to say is that the acquisition of money should not be the most important factor in our decisions and choices. If we do what we love and love what we do then we will produce good quality services and products. It is those services and products that people need and want. We all think that we need money to get them, but certainly, there is another, perhaps even a better way to get what we need. Desiring money causes greed and greed leads to evil thoughts and actions. That goes back to the beginning. Money is neither good nor evil, so let’s use it for good. It may require you to do a little hard work, but if it’s something you love then you probably won’t mind. It may also require you to make some sacrifices like getting the Ford instead of the Lexus. Is that really so bad? You could be riding a bike like the man in my town. He works hard to provide for his family and rides a bike everywhere instead of buying a car. I call him “Cowboy” and he always has a smile for me. We manage to communicate even though we don’t even speak the same language and those two things show me that a little love for our fellow man can take me more places than money can. Money doesn’t give me that good feeling in my soul that a smile and a job well done can.
I cleaned my house yesterday, a typical chore. I felt accomplished with what I had done. I could do my best cleaning someone else’s house and get the same feeling because it is a job well done. Whether they would pay me in cash or with some food doesn’t matter. I would use the money to buy food anyway. (Evidence of how money is just the middle man.) What matters is that I use my skills to benefit others and they use theirs to benefit me. It becomes a mutually beneficial situation. I believe that more people would find peace and happiness if we looked after everyone’s best interest and not just our own and put a little more effort into doing our best work and worried less about just finishing.
I went off on a little tangent there, but I hope my meaning is clear. I am not a communist or a socialist. I strongly believe in the free enterprise system and in doing my best work always. My posts are generally unedited other than for spelling so my rambling, wandering mind sometimes takes over and I often end up somewhere other than where a started or I take a long and winding path back to the beginning.
Have a great day everyone and do your best at whatever it is that you do today!
