Most of you know about West Nile Virus, a disease that kills birds and can be passed on to humans……just kidding!
To be perfectly honest, I have no idea why this is called Dead Bird Dip, there’s not even chicken or eggs in it. Although, it would be delicious if it were made with chicken instead of ground beef! I will have to consult the person of origin on this subject. Good thing I know her. She was a very close friend of my mom. They went to high school together and reconnected when they worked on their 20th high school reunion together and they stayed close for the next 20+ years. Here is a picture of her with my mom in 2009. Linda is on the left and my mom is on the right. Ain’t Florida great! You never have to get dressed! Sorry about the picture Linda, but if it makes you feel any better, you kinda resemble a flamingo. (OH!!!) If you don’t get that little inside joke, see my Project Optimism post: Flamingos Make Me Happy. My mom was in the middle of chemo treatments and nearly bald at the time. Judging by the colors, I can be 99% certain that this is a Chicago Cubs hat.
Thank you for giving my mom this recipe Linda. It was very good. I doubled it and we actually had it for our main course at dinner last night. OK….it was our only course. It has everything though! protein, carbs, dairy and vegetables, so I consider it a well-rounded meal. I guess the rest of you probably want to see the actual recipe so here’s the card:
It was written on one of my mom’s recipe cards by Linda. You will be seeing several of these if you follow this page. I think they’re really pretty and fun. I didn’t find “Green Mountain Gringo” salsa, so I just used a 24oz. jar of hot salsa (pick your favorite brand). Remember, I doubled the recipe. I probably could have used up to 32 oz. of salsa because the average jar is about 16 oz. I interepreted ‘small bag’ of cheese to mean 8 oz. I stirred over med heat until thick and gooey (all the cheese melted). Heat and Eat! It would be great on game day, whatever your game may be! I am not going to rewrite this one because it is very clear on the card. If you have a question, you can leave it in the comment section.
Side note: None of my chicks have died from it yet and no birds were harmed in the making of it. Although, as I said, it would be really good made with chicken!
