The recipe may say Christmas cookies, but they are good any time of the year! Who doesn’t remember making cookie cutter cookies with someone as a kid? One of my daughter’s favorite memories is making dog bone cookies with my neighbor one day. All my kids have liked making these cookies with me at some time. Now, they mostly just like when I make them for them. I remember making them with my mom a couple times, but there are other cookies that I remember more. Perhaps, when my kids have kids, they’ll make them together and have fun memories of making them with me. Or, maybe they’ll just leave the cookie making to me. I will gladly make cookies with grandchildren!
That is my mom’s handwriting and you can see the tape marks at the top and bottom where it was probably taped to another one of those yellow index cards. The stains show that it was a much used and loved recipe!
To show how adaptable they are, I made springtime cookies! I made Spring Chickens…..
and Easter Bunnies…..
and flowers for them to eat (so they don’t eat mine!)……
My family is weird and likes them better without frosting or decorations so I don’t have to take all the time to decorate them, but they end up looking a little boring. Feel free to decorate away! Use frosting, or colored sugar, or any other sprin(g)kles that your family likes. The dough can also be colored or flavored to suit your tastes, although I think it’s better to just use colored frosting on them.
2 1/2 cup flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup shortening (I don’t ever use shortening. I only use the 1/4 cup of butter, but that is entirely up to the baker.)
1/4 cup butter
1 tsp. vanilla
Sift flour, baking powder and salt. (I also don’t sift, but I do mix it with a hand whisk). Cream remaining ingredients and add the flour mixture. Refrigerate for two hours. Roll. Cut. Cook. 400 degrees for 6-8 minutes
I hope you enjoy this recipe!
